Minutes of the April 24, 2008 Regular Meeting

 

The meeting convened at 5:00PM in the Adams Leadership Center with President Steve Percival presiding.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by students from Butterfield Elementary School.

 

Roll Call

The roll was called and board members John Delap, Tim Kring, Howard Hamilton, Steve Percival, Susan Heil, Tim Hudson, and Becky Purcell were present.

 

Recognition

Ramay Junior High student Aneeka Majid was honored for creating the winning design for the district’s Green Team t-shirts.

 

Patsy Williford, Fayetteville High math teacher, received an Above & Beyond Award from the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for her outstanding work with students.

 

Andrea Love and Pete Burks, Fayetteville High students, received a Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Award for winning first place in Words & Music in the 2008 Arkansas Debate & Forensics Tournament.

 

Riley Sokora, Fayetteville High student, received a Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Award for winning first place in Sports & Entertainment Marketing at the 2008 Arkansas DECA competition.

 

Linda Clay, Fayetteville High marketing teacher, received a Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Award for being named the 2008 Arkansas Marketing Teacher of the Year.

 

NcNair Middle School principal Michelle Hayward received a Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Award for being named the 2008 Arkansas Middle Level Principal of the Year.

 

Consent Agenda

Howard Hamilton made a motion to approve the consent agenda.  Tim Kring seconded the motion, which was passed by a 7-0 vote.

 

High School Select Committee II Recommendation

Board member Tim Hudson and members of the High School Select Committee II presented information regarding the work of the committee, the potential site options and site selection criteria.  In addition, the committee recommended that the new Fayetteville High School be built on the property referred to as Morningside Drive.  The Board authorized Dr. Bobby New, superintendent, to work with the University of Arkansas regarding a selling price for the high school property.

 

State Required District Technology Plan

The Board voted 7-0 to approve the 2009-2012 district technology plan that is required by the State of Arkansas.  Susan Norton, chief information officer, reported that the district technology committee, comprised of teachers, district staff and community members, worked on the plan.  The template for the plan is provided by the Arkansas Department of Education.  The technology plan for Fayetteville Schools can be found on the district website.  Susan Heil made the motion, which was seconded by Howard Hamilton.

 

Student Transfers

The Board voted 6-1 to no longer approve student transfer requests from Fayetteville Public Schools to other school districts effective for the 2008-09 school year.  Ms. Ginny Wiseman, associate superintendent for administration, noted that neighboring school districts are not allowing out of district transfers.  She added that we have lost $75,000 in revenue this year by allowing students to transfer to other districts.  Howard Hamilton made the motion, which was seconded by Susan Heil.

 

Land Acquisition

The Board voted 5-2 to authorize the district to begin negotiations for the purchase of property.  Dr. Randy Willison, associate superintendent for operations, added that the 9.57 acre purchase would provide more frontage on Deane Solomon Road.  Tim Kring made the motion, which was seconded by Howard Hamilton.

 

Teacher Grievance Request

Board president Steve Percival reported that a teacher has requested a grievance hearing and that the Board needs to decide if the issue is grievable.  Dr. Bobby New, superintendent, and Bob Gettino from the Arkansas Education Association presented information related to the request.  In addition, Rudy Moore, Jr., school district attorney, reported on the legal aspects of the issue.  Becky Purcell made a motion that this is not a grievable matter.  Susan Heil seconded the motion, which passed by a 7-0 vote.

 

Revised NWACC Memorandum of Understanding

Dr. Willison reported that the district and Northwest Arkansas Community College are working on revisions to the Memorandum of Understanding for the facilities at the Regional Technology Center.

 

Superintendent Interview Process

Board president Steve Percival presented the proposed interview schedule for Dr. Richard Abernathy, superintendent candidate, on May 2nd & 3rd.
