Minutes of the April 25, 2002 Regular Meeting

 

 

The meeting convened at 5:00 PM in the Adams Leadership Center with President Steve Percival presiding.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by students from Vandergriff Elementary School.

 

Roll Call

The roll was called and board members Shannon McCuin, Howard Hamilton, Laura Underwood, Steve Percival, Malcolm McNair, and Susan Heil were present.

 

Recognition of People, Events, and Programs

The following Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Awards were presented:

West Campus students who received medals in the Arkansas SkillsUSA competition and the  ProStart competition were recognized.


West Campus teacher Marilyn Rathburn was honored for being named the 2002 ProStart Teacher of the Year.


The FHS Gymnastics team was honored for winning their fifth consecutive state championship. The team now ranks second in the number of consecutive state championships won in the history of Arkansas gymnastics.


Ramay teacher Jean Davis, Adult Education teacher Lana Clark, and East Campus assistant principal John Wesson were named the April “Above & Beyond” award winners by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for their exemplary work with students.

 

Consent Agenda

Howard Hamilton made a motion to accept the consent agenda.  Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 6-0 vote.

 

Computer Use Policy

Susan Cromwell reported on the computer use policy for students and staff members.  She told the board that Mr. Rudy Moore needed more time to review the policy and make revisions.  Howard Hamilton made a motion to table the policy in current form.  Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 6-0 vote.  The board will vote on the revised policy at the May Board meeting.

 

2002-03 District Calendar

Ron Jared presented the 2002-03 district calendar and the 2002-03 Happy Hollow Continuous Learning Calendar.  Mr. Jared asked for approval of these calendars with the following change.  August 30 will be a student day, not a restructuring day for ACSIP training.  Instead, ACSIP training will be scheduled for August 14.  The first day of school for students will be Monday, August 19, 2002 and the first day for teachers will be Wednesday, August 14, 2002.  Howard Hamilton made a motion to approve the 2002-03 district calendar with the proposed change.  Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 6-0 vote.  Howard Hamilton made a motion to approve the 2002-03 Happy Hollow Continuous Learning calendar with the proposed change.  Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 6-0 vote.

 

All Star Games Update

Dick Johnson reported that the All Star Games will be held June 14-21, 2002.  Coach Johnson said that this event will bring an estimated $2 million in revenue to the area.  He added that these games are an excellent opportunity for the school district to give back to the community which, along with the University of Arkansas, was instrumental in getting the games moved to Fayetteville.

 

System Upgrades Update

Susan Cromwell reported that the district’s compute system will undergo a series of upgrades over the summer months.  The network will be upgraded for higher speeds between buildings and to implement new network management tools


The Online Library Catalog will be upgraded to the latest version from Innopac and Millennium and will include enhanced features for web interfaces to new search engines and materials booking.


The student and financial information systems will be upgraded to include ad hoc query reporting and web interfaces.

 

Transportation Software System

Roy Karr reported on the software package that the district has purchased for use in mapping bus routes.  The software will help optimize both the efficiency and effectiveness of the district’s bus routes.  There are numerous uses for the software, including boundary planning, route optimization, fuel usage optimization, etc.

 

CAP Report

Ron Jared reported on the CAP (Career and Academic Plan) conferences that are held at Ramay and Woodland Junior High, Fayetteville High School and West Campus Technical Center.  Each student has a CAP conference in the spring in which they select their courses for the upcoming school year.  These conferences help involve the parents and teachers in the course selection process.

 

Student Expulsion

The board went into closed session at 6:45PM to discuss a student expulsion.  The board went back into open session at 7:00PM.  Susan Heil made a motion to expel Student A for the remainder of the school year.  Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 4-0 vote. 

 

Adjournment

Laura Underwood made a motion to adjourn.  Susan Heil seconded the motion, which passed by a 4-0 vote.  The meeting was adjourned at 7:01 PM.
