Fayetteville Board of Education
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM in the Adams Leadership Center with President Steve Percival presiding.
Board members Shannon McCuin, Laura Underwood, Howard Hamilton, Steve Percival, Susan Heil, Malcolm McNair and Christine Bell were present.
Dr. Lisa Morstad, chief financial officer, gave a brief overview of the Long Term Capital Planning committee. Mike Gray, associate superintendent, expressed appreciation for board approval of a construction manager. He also reported that a public forum was held regarding the district’s 10-year capital plan.
Mike Gray and Laleh Amirmoez, architect for middle schools, discussed the possibility of adding 5th grads pods and 6th and 7th grade pods to the current middle schools. Dr. Edwin Strickland, McNair Middle School principal, and Mr. Mike Mason, Holt Middle School principal, attended the meeting to answer questions. Discussion was held regarding the affect that additional students at the middle school would have on parking, traffic, curriculum, staff, and current space.
Mike Gray electronically reviewed some of the comments made at the December 2nd public meeting.
Mr. Gray made the recommendation to start planning a new school, which would house elementary grades K-5 and middle school grades 6&7. Howard Hamilton made a motion authorizing administration to seek a site for the K-7 campus in the area west of Highway 540, between Highways 16 and 62 in the southwest quadrant of the school district. Laura Underwood seconded the motion. Mr. Hamilton amended his motion to read that the area to be explored should be in the southwest quadrant of the school district. The motion passed by a 6-1 vote.
Dr. Bobby New, superintendent, and Dr. Morstad gave a review of the educational acts recently passed in the special legislative session and how they will affect the Fayetteville School District.
Howard Hamilton made the motion to adjourn. Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 7-0 vote. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM.
