Fayetteville Board of Education
The meeting convened at 5:00PM in the Adams Leadership Center with President Steve Percival presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by students from Jefferson Elementary School.
The roll was called and board members Shannon McCuin, Laura Underwood, Steve Percival, Susan Heil, and Christine Bell were present.
The Board presented four Recognition of Outstanding Achievement Awards. West Campus student Nick Gibbs was honored for placing in the top ten in the nation in the Johnson & Wales culinary contest in Rhode Island. West Campus teacher Don Hardgrave was honored for being named the 2002 Outstanding Career and Technical Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas Trade & Industrial Educational Association. Holt Middle School teacher Melissa Miller was honored for receiving a 2001 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. East Campus teacher Charles Pudlas was honored for being named the 2002 Arkansas Marketing Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas Association of Marketing Education Teachers.
Laura Underwood made the motion to accept the consent agenda. Christine Bell seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-0 vote.
Judy Rana presented the Tuberculosis Screening Policy to the Board for approval. Ms. Rana noted that the Washington County Health Department will train the school nurses to administer the test. The Health Department will also come to the schools to read the tests. If there is a positive result, the individual will be sent to the Health Department for a chest x-ray at no cost. Susan Heil made the motion to approve the Tuberculosis Screening Policy. Laura Underwood seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-0 vote.
David Hartz asked the Board to approve the administrators’ contract renewals. Laura Underwood made the motion to approve the contract renewals. Shannon McCuin seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-0 vote.
David Hartz reported that the district’s efforts to recruit new staff members to replace those who opted for the severance plan are going well. The district has received 274 applications in which 538 certification areas are represented. Mr. Hartz also noted that he and Greg Mones have attended several teacher recruitment fairs and that interest in the Fayetteville School District is very high.
David Hartz provided information regarding the Arkansas School Board Association’s school board policy manual service. This service assists districts in developing general policies that are in accordance with state law and provides suggested wording for each policy. Mr. Hartz further noted that the subscription is $800 per year for a five-year period and that we will not be committed to using their verbage. Mr. Percival added that a recurring schedule of policy review needs to be created to insure that policies are reviewed every three years. The Board gave approval to contract with the ASBA for school board policy manual service.
The Board went into closed session at 5:35PM to review information regarding a student expulsion. The Board returned to regular session at 5:55PM. Ron Jared recommended that Student A be suspended for the rest of the school year. Laura Underwood made a motion to accept the recommendation for suspension for Student A. Christine Bell seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-0 vote.
After citizen participation, Laura Underwood made a motion to adjourn. Susan Heil seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-0 vote. The meeting was adjourned at 6:15PM.
