Answers

1) Does the city finance any part of the schools?

No, the City of Fayetteville does not provide financing for any district operations.

2) How much of the district budget is state funding and how much is from local taxes?

The state provides about 35% of the budget in funding, and 53% of the budget comes from local property taxes. Only 9% of the funding comes from Federal
grants.

3) What percentage of the district's budget is spent on athletics or administration?

Less than 2% of the district’s budget is allocated to athletics. Donations from private donors to the athletic booster club enable the athletic programs to expand their programs without additional cost to the district.

The district also spends about 3.8% of the budget on administrative salaries. This includes all district administrators, principals, and assistant principals.

4) What is a Mill and what are the millage rates for Washington County?

Mills & Millage Rates

The county set its millage rate recently. The 2007 rate dropped 0.2 mills because of required rate rollbacks. A mill is one-tenth of a cent, and each mill produces $1 of tax for each $1,000 of assessed valuation on property. A property’s assessed value is 20 percent of its appraised value, and the assessment is multiplied by the millage rate to determine the taxes owed. The county’s millage rate is composed of the general millage, the road millage and the county library millage.

County General 4.5 mills

County Road 1.1 mills

County Library 1.0 mills*

Total 6.6 mills

* To be collected throughout the county except within Fayetteville which maintains its own public library.
