Memorizing lines, rehearsing until perfection, and setting up the stage all lead to the final performance. The school's play, "You Can't Take it With You," is a comedy written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. This play tells the story of two families, the strange Sycamores and the wealthy, snobbish Kirbys.
When attractive, young Tony Kirby falls in love with Alice Sycamore, they are forced to have their families introduced. The encounter proves they are from different social classes and lifestyles. Tony and Alice become discouraged and are unsure if they should be together, according to dramatists.com.
"Comedic plays are really fun to do," said senior Collin Woody, who plays Tony. "And they are a nice change of pace from the dramatic, depressing plays."
For Woody, the allure of acting is being able to portray different characters. "The opportunity to play someone else, to be someone else, it's always an enlightening experience," Woody said.
Other prominent roles include seniors Christina Sagan and Emily Beaver and junior Cody Neilsen. "(The entire cast is) really committed to their parts," drama teacher Warren Rosenaur said. "And each student has their own unique personality on stage."
Typically, big cast productions like "You Can't Take it With You" are performed in the spring; however, this particular play is in the fall because the auditorium will be demolished in March to make way for more construction of the new high school.
Some students are pleased the school is still able to have a fall play. "I love seeing people I know act in the fall play," senior Stephanie Long said. "I am pleasantly surprised with our school's talent."
Performances will be in the auditorium on Oct. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m.
