The Future of Fayetteville High School
The Fayetteville School Board has determined that the district needs a new high school to serve grades 9 - 12. The new school will not move into the design phase until the board chooses a location.
A citizen committee chaired by Tim Hudson made the recommendation to locate the new high school on Morningside Drive, property not yet owned by the district. However, the district is negotiating with the University of Arkansas over the sale of the current site of the high school. The result of these negotiations will determine whether the high school can be relocated.
Fayetteville High School was built for a maximum 1,000 student capacity when it opened in 1952. Enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year is 1,884 in grades 10 - 12. Adding 9th grade would make the population 2,518 students.
The FHS Select Committee I and the School Board considered building a second high school instead of one larger school at length. Based on the research done by the first high school committee, the main determining factor in the decision to build one school instead of two were issues surrounding how to make two facilities equal, both in terms of academics and population distribution so as to avoid a “have/have not” school environment.
Precise calculations about the potential millage that must be added in order to fund construction cannot be made available until the site location decision is made and design phase is complete. An estimate is that each one-mill increase will cost $20 per $100,000 in home value.
