Sustainable Building Practices at FHS

The School Board has made sustainability a priority when building and remodeling schools. Fayetteville High School is being built to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) status. Phase I is currently tracking at LEED Silver and Phase II is tracking at LEED Gold. LEED status is determined by points which are given for everything from installing bike racks to diverting waste from landfills. Following is more detailed information about the project, provided by John Coleman of Viridian, a sustainable building consulting firm. • As of March 7, 2012, 93% of total construction waste has been diverted from the landfill, enough for 2 LEED points on the project.
• By sourcing more than 20% of materials from regional sources and using materials with greater than 20% recycled content, the project will achieve 2 additional points.
• FHS is set to score well in Indoor Environmental Quality by selecting adhesives, paints, coatings, and construction materials with low quantities of volatile organic compounds and no added urea formaldehyde.
• The mechanical design team has integrated measures that will ensure adequate fresh air ventilation and filtration to provide healthy indoor air for the students and staff.
• Points are also being achieved by focusing on thermal comfort and meeting rigid acoustical performance standards required by LEED for Schools porjects.
• Water conservation for indoor plumbing fixtures is a prerequisite for all LEED projects. A minimum of 20% water reduction is required. Once completed, FHS will demonstrate an estimated savings of 33% or 652,000 gallons of water annually.
• Outdoor water use is expected to achieve more than 50% reduction through the incorporation of water efficient landscaping techniques such as drought tolerant, native plant species, and bioswales.
  
• Because of the School Board's decision to keep the high school at its current location, the project scores very high in the Sustainable Sites section of LEED. This included credits for connectivity to other amenities (restaurants, library, and existing neighborhoods) as well as proximity to bus routes and the trail network.
• By installing bike racks and offering preferred parking for fuel efficient vehicles, the project will receive more points for encouraging alternative forms of transportation.
• Though the high school is not receiving LEED credits for stormwater quantity control, runoff is being reduced by 20 % compared to pre-construction flows. This reduction is particularly critical for downstream neighborhoods in low-lying areas of Fayetteville.
