APPLE Award

A.P.P.L.E. Award winners Howard Hamilton and Alan Wilbourn with President-Elect Gina Pendergraft

The Fayetteville Public Education Foundation was pleased to announce Howard Hamilton and Alan Wilbourn as the A.P.P.L.E. Award winners at the 2012 Celebration of Excellence!

The A.P.P.L.E. award, A Patron Providing Leadership by Example, gives recognition to those who have gone above and beyond in supporting the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation and its mission to provide resources, programs and opportunities for our students that would not be available through the normal budget. It emphasizes the responsibility of business leaders to help provide a better future for our community and our children through support of the public schools.

Liberty Bank and Howard Hamilton have actively been supporting the schools and the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation for many years. Howard has served on the Foundation Board, as well as the Fayetteville School Board, and as the leader of Liberty Bank, truly emulates the Bank's slogan of "community banking starts with communities." Under the leadership of Howard, Liberty Bank actively encourages and supports employee volunteerism and involvement. The Bank has consistently supported Foundation events serving as a sponsor of both the Hall of Honor and the Celebration for over 8 years.

Howard says "quality education is a driving force in the overall quality of life, including our economic vitality" and both his personal support and Liberty Bank's ongoing support of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation demonstrate dedication to this belief.

Alan Wilbourn serves the Fayetteville School District as the Public Information Officer. He has demonstrated his commitment to education by his active involvement in the Chamber Education Committee, the Teen Leadership Program and the Arkansas School Public Relations Association for many years. Alan's commitment to the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation reaches back to the Foundation's very beginnings. Through the generosity of the Fayetteville Public Schools, Alan was the Foundation's first employee - serving as part time director of the Foundation from 1992 until Treva Hamilton was hired as the first full time director in 1998.

Alan's dedication to the Foundation did not end there - he has consistently offered his support, guidance and public relations expertise to the Foundation since that time. Yearly Alan works with the Foundation on the Hall of Honor and Celebration events, and offers invaluable guidance on advertising and public relations efforts. Most recently Alan has helped the Foundation take steps into the social media world.

Leap Ahead is a literacy intervention program for K-2 students that is being developed by Fayetteville educators to increase the literacy levels of students and to decrease the growing number of dropouts. The program begins with three weeks of intensive literacy intervention in the summer and continues with ongoing services throughout the school year. Students will participate in intensive, research-based literacy interventions as well community-based learning to build content and background knowledge. Between July 12 and July 29, one hundred fifty students will benefit from this program and the generosity of the Wal-Mart Foundation’s gift. They will attend the program Monday through Thursday, 8:30 – 3:00 p.m. at Owl Creek Elementary.

Intensive research-based reading interventions will be incorporated into the individualized intervention plans for each student that attends the Leap Ahead program. Lexia Reading, a computerized reading program that provides phonics instruction and gives students individualized, independent practice in basic reading skills, will be incorporated into the intervention rotation for identified students. The What Works Clearinghouse has reviewed the research and Lexia and has found that the program has potentially positive effects on student achievement in the area of reading. After the initial purchase of the Lexia program, Fayetteville Schools will be able to provide continued access to Leap Ahead students in their home schools throughout the coming years as long as the need persists. Lexia also provides intervention activities for classroom teachers matched to individual student need using the data on student progress through the program.
