About Principles
and Standards
and E-Standards
"The E-Standards helps take our efforts of supporting mathematics teachers
and promoting a high-quality mathematics education for every child to
the next level."
Lee V. Stiff, NCTM President,
July 2000
Welcome to the E-Standards, the
electronic edition of Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Principles and Standards extends the vision of NCTM's previous
three Standards documents and represents a continuing effort to
support mathematics teachers and ensure that every student receives a
high-quality mathematics education. The document delineates six Principles
that set forth important characteristics of Mathematics programs and ten
Standards that discuss the mathematics students need to be able to know
and do across the grades.
The E-Standards includes
all of the text of Principles and Standards, plus these added features:
The E-Standards are just one
more component of our effort to set high standards for our students, and
higher standards for ourselves.
The E-Standards are just one
