1. Nor-Joe Imports.
505 Frisco Ave., Old Metairie. 833-9240. This is awonderful grocery of
imported Italian delicacies, and in the tradition of such places, they
make a fantastic muffuletta, using the best imaginable ingredients.
2. The Napoleon House.
500 Chartres, French Quarter. 524-9752. The bar part of the old place
has made a definitive version of themuffuletta for a long time.
3. Bosco's.
1770 La. Hwy. 59, Mandeville. 985-624-5066. This is a new Italian cafe
in Mandeville, making a muffuletta with all the great ingredients,
including the mortadella.
4. Serio's.
133 St. Charles Ave., CBD. 523-2668. Not the madhouse it once was, now
that so many offices have moved out of downtown. But still the purveyor
of good sandwiches, including a well-assembled muffuletta.
5. Mr Ed's.
1001 Live Oak, Bucktown. 838-0022. The nicest dining room serving
muffulettas routinely. Another place that would benefit from slicing
the meats and cheeses thinner.
6. Katie's. 3701 Iberville, Mid-City. 488-6582. A generous version with an olive salad a touch overwhelmed by garlic.
7. Central Grocery.
923 Decatur, French Quarter. 523-1620. The most famous muffuletta in
town has all the right ingredients, but not enough of them.
8. Liuzza's.
3636 Bienville, Mid-City. 482-9120. Liuzza's version is called the
"Frenchuletta," because instead of employing a standard muffuletta
loaf, it's made on French bread.
9. Giovanni's.
1325 Veterans Blvd., Metairie. 835-4558. Thinly-sliced meats, a little
light on the olive salad. If you order it cold, it might come out
ice-cold, so ask for the bread to be heated.
10. Come Back Inn. 8016 W. Metairie Ave., Metairie. 467-9316. A
seriously overloaded muffuletta with a finely-chopped olive salad and meats sliced a little too thick.
