TOUR ON PATTERNS • INTRODUCTION

This section focuses on the study of patterns. It includes a virtual math trail, an unstructured tour of the museum to look for patterns, and references to the topic of patterns in PSSM.

  • Virtual Math Trail on Geometry and Patterns. This link will take you to a guided virtual tour of the museum. The questions in this math trail focus on geometrical relationships of some structural elements of the building as well as some of the art pieces of the museum that in some way can be related to the recognition, description, or design of patterns.

  • Patterns in Principles and Standards: Discussion Draft. This link will take you to a page where you can find excerpts and links on the topic of patterns from Principles and Standards for School Mathematics Discussion Draft. The study of patterns implies to observe certain order and repetition of elements or events. Finding patterns requires the classification and organization of information. Some mental operations involved in the study of patterns may include structural analysis, prediction, and generalization.

  • Looking for Patterns in the Museum. This link will take you to an unstructured virtual tour of the museum. The idea is that you explore the museum on your own to look for patterns and keep track of your findings. You can also share your findings with others. Why is that almost every person can recognize a pattern even though they do not have a formal definition of it? Follow this link and try to find as many patterns in the surroundings of the building, its design and architecture as well as in some of the art pieces of the museum.
