CONNECTION
TO THE
STANDARDS

Below you can find relavant links to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics in Grades 6-8.
Geometry Standard:
  • "Students need experience with complex two- and three-dimensional figures that they examine, build, compose, and decompose. Such experience can be obtained using a variety of media, including paper-and-pencil sketches, geometric models, and geometry software"
    (The 6-8 Geometry standard).
Measurement Standard:
  • "Another goal in grades 6-8 is for students to become proficient at determining the perimeter, area, and volume of many figures and to use this proficiency in problem situations"
    ( The 6-8 Measurement standard).
Reasoning and Proof:
  • "Reasoning is intimately tied to teaching for thoughtful engagement and learning with understanding. When students' reasoning is made explicit, it both supports the construction of understanding and provides evidence of the current status of understanding. Thus, students in grades 6-8 should have numerous occasions and opportunities to engage in mathematical reasoning"
    (The 6-8 Reasoning standard).
  • "In the middle grades, students should frequently be asked to explain relationships involving mathematical concepts"
    (The 6-8 Reasoning standard).
Communication:
  • "Teachers need to build a sense of community in middle grade classrooms so students feel free to express their ideas honestly and openly, without fear or ridicule".
  • "In this(a) classroom atmosphere of mutual trust and respect, it is acceptable to struggle with ideas, to make mistakes, and to be unsure. Students are willing to participate actively because they know that they will not be criticized personally, even if their mathematical thinking is critiqued. Explanation, questioning, debate, and sense-making are natural and expected activities in this(a) mathematics classroom"
    (The 6-8 Communication standard).
