Here Kevin shows that he has a way of thinking correctly about the volume--as adding the volumes of cross-sections. This strategy anticipates a very important idea of calculus. Discussions like this allow teachers to assess the development of student thinking and make informed decisions about future lessons.

Reflection Questions

  • What might the teacher do to help the class resolve the differences in the answers provided?
  • What types of activities could the teacher plan which would help students to further develop their conceptual understanding of volume, and calculate volumes of cubes correctly?
