Tips for use:
1. If you want books about an author,
do a keyword search .
2. Place an asterisk where you think a word will change forms. This is called truncation , and it will often improve your search.
examples:
forest* retrieves forest , forests , forestry , forester
comput* retrieves compute , computes , computer , computers , computing , computation
Use truncation even when the word could be singular or plural.
bear* retrieves bear or bears
food* retrieves food or foods
3. Use Boolean operators.
AND - You do not have to type in AND. If you enter two keywords side by side, FALCON will search for each word separately.
example: rainforest animal* retrieves Animals of the Rainforest as well as Rainforest Animals of the World .
OR - Use OR to get items with either term.
example: teen* or youth or adolesc*
car* or automobile*
aquarium* or tropical fish
NOT - Use NOT to leave out items containing certain words
example: africa* folktale* not america* gets only African folktales, not African-American folktales.
sports not medicine gets only sports books that are not about sports medicine.
4. Use parentheses to nest items (to instruct the computer which part of your search to perform first.) Anything inside parentheses will be searched for first.
example:
> teen* (alcohol or drugs) gets items on alcohol and drug use among teens.
teen* alcohol or drugs gets items on alcohol use among teens plus
everything on drugs.
> (atomic or nuclear) (power or energy) gets items on atomic power, atomic
energy, nuclear power, or nuclear energy.
atomic or nuclear power or energy gets all items containing the word
atomic , all items containing the word energy , and all items containing the
phrase nuclear power .
