Keeping 8,600 students healthy can be challenging! Our Registered School Nurses are experienced health care professionals. Helping students and staff who are ill is just as important as educating them on how stay healthy.

 

School Nurse Goals:

What if your child needs a prescription medication during school?

School personnel will administer prescription medication to students under the following conditions:

 

• A parent or guardian has filled out and signed a Medication Administration Release form for each medication to be given. Forms are available at each school.

• The medication must be in the original pharmacy labeled container which indicates:

  1. The student's name

  2. The name of the medication

  3. Clear directions for administration of the medication

What if your child needs an over-the-counter medication during school?

• A parent or guardian must fill out and sign a Medication Administration Release form for each medication to be given. Forms are available at each school.

• The medication must be in the original unopened container with the child's name on it.

• Any student caught taking any medications without proper documentation may face disciplinary action. This includes both over-the-counter and prescription medication.
• Only an RN can administer OTC meds unless there is a doctor's order or prescription.

What if your child needs an asthma inhaler or an epi pen?

• Students may carry these and use them as needed if the parent and child's physician has filled out the proper forms. Forms are available at each school.

What are the state immunization requirements?

• POLIO - Four doses are required with the last dose being after the 4th birthday.

• DTP/DTaP/Tdap - Four doses are required for Kindergarteners with the last dose being after the 1st birthday. Three doses are required for students in Grades 1-12 with the last dose being after the 1st birthday. Students entering 7th grade are required to have a Tdap, if applicable.
  

• MEASLES - Two doses are required with the first dose being after the 1st birthday, and the second dose administered at least 28 days after the first dose.
  

• RUBELLA - One dose is required after the 1st birthday.
  

• MUMPS - One dose is required after the 1st birthday.
  

• MEASLES, RUBELLA AND MUMPS - Two doses called MMR are required with the first dose being after the 1st birthday, and the second dose administered at least 28 days after the first dose.
  

• HEPATITIS B - Three doses are required with the second dose given one month after the first dose and the third dose four months after the first dose. It is not necessary to begin the series over if the child had the first dose as an infant and has not had any more. (Students ages 11-15 can be on a two dose schedule.)
  

• VARICELLA - Two doses are required for Kindergarteners with one dose on or after the 1st birthday, and the second dose administered 28 days after the first dose. One dose is required for students in Grades 1-12 on or after the 1st birthday. A parent/guardian or physician history of disease may be given in lieu of vaccine.
